Exquisite Thoughts presents the frenetic first collaboration between Net Warner and Ellen Gillett. Showcasing a celebration of process, chance, and chaos, this experimental film acts as both a form of visual dialogue reminiscent of their friendship, and an exciting departure in their respective practices.
‘Light Work’ as a theme prompted an ironic spin on the often-intense nature of the artists’ working relationship as co-directors of ZEST. Taking on the simple instructions of the Surrealism-originated game ‘exquisite corpse’ through passing footage back and forth to be edited and developed, Exquisite Thoughts takes on a life of its own; mimicking the rhythmic flow of conversation and idea-formation.
In adding-to and breaking-down each other’s digital material, Exquisite Thoughts pays homage to the strength of ideas that flourish from a lack of prescribed rules. Exquisite Thoughts encapsulates, also, the important work required to move forward together. The work required to maintain a collective, a practice, a friendship. The hard work that can feel incredibly light.
